Q1: What’s the difference between Burst Protection and Freeze Protection?
A1: The burst point of RV/Marine Antifreeze is the temperatire at which a sealed crosslinked polyethylene pipe filled with undiluted product will burst. Burst points are a standard created by the plumbing industry in the 1930s to indicate the relative strength of antifreeze. The have since become synonymous with the name of antifreeze products used for winter storage. Burst points help consumers choose the proper product based on the lowest expected temperature at which a fluid has frozen to the point it has formed crystals and will no longer flow, but has not yet begun to expand.
Q2: What are the Freeze points of the RV Antifreeze you can purchase from Build It Right?
A2: Build It Right sells RV Antifreeze in 2 different grades: -50°F burst protection and -100°F burst protection. According to the manufacturer, the -50°F Burst Protection RV antifreeze has a freeze point of approx. +7°F. And the -100°F Burst Protection antifreeze has a freeze point of approx. -20°F. Both products will begin to slush before these points. When these products do freeze they will expand. As mentioned in Q/A 1 the burst point is from the plumbing industry and a point where the fluid expands enough to crack a polyethylene pipe. We do not warranty this product against expansion or cracking of your equipment.
Q3: Can I use windshield washer fluid?
A3: The reason that Build It Right does not sell windshield washer fluid is that it is toxic to wildlife and labeled as DOT hazardous substance for transport in quantities over 5.0L
Q4: Which product should I choose?
A4: The choice is yours, but know that as the temperature drops the solution begins to solidify and expand, putting pressure on pipes that can lead to damage. This is why it is important to select an antifreeze that will provide burst and freeze protection appropriate for a specific region’s lowest anticipated temperatures. Be sure to take into account a wind chill factor which can be upward of a 10 degree drop in temperature when driving on the highway. Products providing lower burst point and freeze point temperatures contain higher concentrations of propylene glycol and are thus more expensive, but they will provide the protection needed in the event of extreme weather. Note: Antifreeze containing alcohol and propylene glycol are not recommended for engine and pump use; these formulas are designed for use in water systems.
